How to hack inclusive culture change starting with choice architecture

The Include™ Approach to inclusion applies an organizational transformation methodology rather than an individual one. The method of creating an inclusive organization and focussing on changing your organizational culture via the deeply and long-held beliefs of individuals is highly inefficient (if not impossible). Applying choice architecture provides a way to expedite transformation and embed new ways of working without relying on changing one person’s belief system at a time.

This is illustrated in 6 stages.
1. Put in place choice architecture that ensures your systems, processes, layout, and accepted norms are inclusive.

2. Choice architecture then requires a person to complete an action in a specific and inclusive way.

Choice Architecture   Requires Specific Action

3. If the action needs to be completed in an inclusive way for the person to be successful - this leads to the individual needing to continue to repeat the action.

4. Repeating an action over time results in developing a habit.

5. Continued and reinforced habits form new and embedded behaviors.

6. Consequently, combining the inclusive behaviors of individuals throughout your organization will result in creating an inclusive organizational culture.

Finally, this approach is underpinned by values and capabilities relevant to your organization that enables diversity to thrive.
